Prior to moving to Torquay, Harvey was a teacher of physical education at a school in the state’s south west, as well as the local football coach, both as a player and non-player, for 20 years. After completing a business diploma, Harvey operated a successful food delivery service in Ocean Grove for 4 years.

Community Update July Edition By Geelongcitycouncil

When needing care for an elderly parent, Harvey and Bridget endured their own experience and frustrations with various care providers and carers, and quickly recognised a gap in the market. They saw a need for a care service in the local area that would be compatible with their own values, treat people with respect and dignity, as well as improve the emotional and physical well-being of others. So, in February 2014, Harvey and Bridget established Simply Helping Geelong and Barwon.

From humble beginnings and a team of two others, Simply Helping Geelong and Barwon has grown. Today it includes more than 120 carers and staff, and an administrative team of eight.

Being locally owned and operated is a huge advantage for those requiring care. We are nearby and readily available, which means decisions can be made quickly. It also gives us the flexibility to quickly adapt to ever-changing care needs. People feel a sense of security knowing that they can rely on our friendly office team for support, information and the ability to schedule carers 24/7 in the event of an emergency.

Seeing a loved one struggle with dementia can create feelings of stress, anxiety, and sadness. It’s only natural to want the best outcome for them, although sometimes the wrong decision can be made in haste. People with dementia don’t always need to move out of their home and into a residential care facility to receive the appropriate care. Here at Simply Helping Geelong and Barwon, we have been able to help, even when the situation seemed desperate. Our qualified carers can provide tailored in-home care services to assist someone living with dementia. We have the resources to consistently roster the same carers to enable relationships to flourish between care giver, care recipient and family members. These trusting relationships coupled with tailored in home support, give people the confidence they need to continue with their everyday activities and participate safely in the community.

Over the years, we have been privileged to witness how finding the right help and in-home care supports can improve someone’s quality of life.
