Battles on the Pitch North Geelong Warriors U21 vs Hume City U21

Callum Ferguson had a blinder for North Geelong Warriors hitting the post in the first half and then prior to taking the feild in the seniors for the first time, the lights went out and the match was postponed.

After only a few weeks in Geelong, young gun Callum Ferguson is on the verge of selection for the first team at North Geelong.

Inside

After impressive performances in the under 21's Ferguson was called up to sit on the bench last week against the top team. Next week on the show we will catch up with club representatives and find out just how close he is to that first start.

Melbourne Heart hope the success of Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC with veteran ex-Socceroos will ensure Josip Skoko makes his home with the fledgling club in next season's A-League.

Currently playing for Croatian giants Hajduk Split, he has just two matches remaining this season - a League match against arch-rivals Dinamo Zagreb on Sunday and a Cup final against NK Siberek on May 6.

Inside North Geelong's Relegation Battle

But they hope the success of Kevin Muscat at the Victory and Steve Corica at Sydney FC will help sway the 34-year-old into joining what is becoming an imposing squad for the Heart's debut season.

Muscat and Corica have been huge influences on their clubs and the competition - exactly the blueprint the Heart see for the 2006 World Cup veteran, should he agree to join them.

It's sensitive, because we don't want to distract him from what he's doing, Heart football operations' boss John Didulica said of the prospect of signing Skoko.

List Of Indian Expatriate Footballers

The challenge for us is to convince him. Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC have shown players over 30 can be a huge success in the league - Muscat and Corica have been most influential at their club.

New marquee player rules for next season, which allow two players - one an Australian - to have their wages counted outside the salary cap, also give the Heart new flexibility to sign Skoko.

But Didulica said while the new rules were welcome, it made little difference to the Heart's recruiting strategy, as their preference was not for a glamour foreign marquee player like Robbie Fowler or ex-Sydney star Dwight Yorke.

Stupidest System In The World': Call For Urgent Rule Change

We've made it clear we're not after a marquee player with a capital M - the marquee player who'll be the focus and centrepiece of everything we do, Didulica said.

To put all our eggs in the one basket with a marquee player has not been our approach - we've never been about elevating one player above the group.

Already the Heart have signed Sydney FC championship players Clint Bolton and Simon Colosimo, and a seasoned group of A-League professionals headed by John Aloisi and ex-Newcastle Jet Matt Thompson.

Season 2010 commenced successfully for SEWFA last weekend with the annual pre-season carnival at Blue Lake Sports Park. For the third successive year, SEWFA has supported the National Breast Cancer Foundation with this fixture highlighted as a Pink Ribbon Carnival, with player and supporter donations to the cause.

The weather provided trying conditions for players and spectators with blustery winds playing havoc with the ball and umbrellas alike. Despite a few heavy showers, the day was relatively fine allowing spectators to enjoy the games from the sidelines.

The addition of Millicent to the Under 14 league gave sufficient teams for a two group competition with the top of each group playing off in the final. In a repeat of last year’s final, Wanderers met Villa in a fast paced fixture. Wanderers looked to threaten early but sharp defensive work from Villa thwarted the strike on goal and formed an attack of their own. Jasmine White was proving a handful out wide on the left and was rewarded with two goals in the first half. A determined Villa fought back in the second half and were awarded a penalty for handball, which was duly converted. The dual Villa attack of Melanie Wilmot and Monique Ianella caused some anxious moments for Wanderers towards the end of the game however their defence rallied by goalkeeper Samantha Freeman resisted until the final whistle.

City and Millicent finished top of their respective groups in the senior competition, each unbeaten in their group games. With City having great depth to their side on the pitch and also on the bench, they entered the final brimming with confidence. Millicent settled into a defensive game, swiftly closing down their opposition and forcing shots wayward. Sarah Ielasi was reading and distributing the ball well for City, often finding an unmarked team mate ready to pounce on any forward passes. Wanita Robinson for Millicent was superb in her tracking back ability and even under pressure from tenacious Tracey Kourmouzis was able to clear the ball effectively. With a nil-nil score at half time, City lifted the tempo. Millicent goal keeper Maria Montuori had been in fine form all day and it took a fine strike from the right to beat her, edging City in front by one which was enough for them to seal the title.

The Junior Development Squad also took to the park for the first time this season. With an increase in numbers, parents were delighted to watch their girls, with some playing their first match. Karissa Coulson and Cody Hood showed their experience scoring early for the Green Dragons. Newcomer Isabella Calderwood proved an asset to the Blue Tacs, moving from her first half defensive position to a more attacking role in the second half, scoring in her first outing. Lucia Musci proved her determination by returning to the pitch after injury and assisting in the Blue’s midfield.

With Round 1 commencing this week, it will be a clean slate as teams take to the park. At noon, Under 14 matches commence with Villa meeting Wanderers in a rematch of the carnival final, with Palace taking on City. At 1.30pm in the senior fixtures, Palace face Portland with 3pm games of City v Villa and United v Wanderers. Millicent will remain at home and host County in both junior and senior matches.

This Saturday is the first round of the season for SEWFA. After last weeks carnival all teams seem keen for the season to start.

THE

Millicent should feel confident against County this week having gone through the carnival undefeated until the final against City. Although, Millicent should keep a look out because County are very good at catching their opponents offside.

Match Report: North Geelong Warriors 1 2 Bentleigh Greens

The Wanderers and United game should be very close, both teams have a very strong defensive line. The end score may depend on whether Kendell and Hayley can break through United's defense before new United signing Keisha gets the ball in the back of the net.

City should be confident and ready for round one after their win in the carnival. Villa may be reliant on their under 14s again this season but will be helped with the experience Mel and Monique have from State teams.

After both teams being in the final four last season, the Palace and Portland game could be a close one. Palace will be glad to have Macca back after being short on senior players in the carnival.
